Mysuru is Karnataka's second- or third-largest urban centre depending on the measure used, with a metropolitan population of roughly a million recorded in the 2011 census and administered by the Mysuru City Corporation.[1] Planned layouts inherited from the princely period — wide avenues, parks, civic buildings — gave the city an unusually legible urban form that later master plans largely respected.
14.2Civic reputation
Mysuru was ranked the cleanest city in India in the Government of India's Swachh Survekshan surveys of 2015 and 2016 and has consistently placed near the top since; it was also included in the Smart Cities Mission.[2] The city hosts the annual International Day of Yoga events at scale and is a centre for Ashtanga yoga instruction with a global student following.
14.3Economy today
Contemporary Mysuru combines tourism, education, and manufacturing and IT services — including a large Infosys campus, aerospace and industrial units, and the long-established silk and sandalwood-oil industries run by state enterprises such as KSIC and Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd (maker of Mysore Sandal Soap, produced since 1916).[3]
